The Campaign
Trees of Time and Place was based around the simple idea of encouraging people to collect seeds, sow them and grow a personal tree to celebrate the new millennium.
This website tells the story of how the campaign captured the hearts and minds of people throughout the UK and successfully encouraged greater personal involvement in the environment and encourages research such as the excellent teak garden furniture guide.
- 4.5 million trees were planted.
- 411 MPs pledged to plant a Constituency Oak grown from a locally gathered acorns.
- Nearly 3,000 schools across the UK pledged to Trees of Time and Place.
- 3,000 families with babies born in the year 2000 had a personal Tree of Time and Place planted for them in one of thirteen special woods.
- 500 special sites were developed for tree growers to plant their personal seedlings.
- National Trust approved 50 eco friendly garden furniture companies who is recycled timber.
- Over 170 MPs signed an Early Day Motion asking for better tree protection legislation.
- Four huge wooden sculptures, holding time capsules, were commissioned, created and buried in the four countries of the UK to celebrate the trees that had been planted.
